Garden Pond Design and Installation in Norfolk and Suffolk

Wildlife and ornamental ponds across Norfolk and Suffolk

Garden pond in Norfolk by Hilton & Green Landscaping

Hilton & Green Landscaping is a landscaping business based in Norfolk, designing and building garden ponds across Norfolk and Suffolk.

A pond changes a garden fundamentally. Within a season, wildlife finds it: frogs, newts, water insects, birds coming to drink and bathe. We design and build garden ponds to suit the space and the customer, from simple wildlife ponds that blend naturally into an existing garden to more formal ornamental designs with pumps, filtration and structured edging.

We handle everything from excavation and liner installation through to aquatic planting and filling, so you have a single team managing the whole project. The pond fits harmoniously into your existing landscape rather than looking like an afterthought.

We also offer maintenance services once your pond is established, keeping the water clear and the planting in good health so you can enjoy the soothing effect of water in your garden without the upkeep becoming a burden.

What's included

  • Pond siting and design consultation
  • Excavation including planting shelves
  • Butyl liner installation with underlay
  • Coping stones and edging
  • Pump and filter fitting where required
  • Marginal and oxygenating planting
  • Filling and initial water treatment advice

How we work

  1. Design and siting

Siting matters more than most people think. Avoid putting a pond directly under deciduous trees unless you are prepared for leaf clearance work. A mix of sun and shade is ideal. We discuss size, depth and style.

  2. Excavation

We dig the pond to the agreed design, including planting shelves at the right depths for different marginal plants.

  3. Liner and edging

We lay a protective underlay before the butyl liner, then bring the liner up over the edges and secure it under coping stones or turf.

  4. Equipment installation

For ornamental ponds, we install the pump and filter, run pipework and cable, and test everything before filling.

  5. Planting and filling

Marginal and oxygenating plants are installed before the pond is filled. We advise on treating tap water and the time needed for the pond to mature biologically.

Materials and Options

Butyl rubber liner is the right choice for most custom-built ponds. It is flexible, can be shaped to any design and will last 20 to 30 years if properly installed and protected from UV exposure at the edges. Pre-formed ponds are quicker to install and fine for standard shapes, but they limit your design options and the smaller ones tend to overheat in summer. Wildlife ponds do not need a pump or filter, which keeps the build cost and running costs down. The water clarifies naturally once oxygenating plants establish. Ornamental ponds with fish need adequate filtration to keep the water healthy. Pump sizing needs to be matched to the pond volume.

Common questions

What types of garden ponds can we install?

We offer a variety of garden pond styles, including wildlife ponds, koi ponds, and formal ponds. Every installation is customised to fit your garden’s size and design, allowing you to choose features such as waterfalls, bridges, or planting areas for aquatic plants.

How long does the pond installation process take?

The duration of pond installation can vary based on the complexity of the design and the size of the pond. Generally, installations can take anywhere from a few days to a week. Our team will provide a timeline based on your specific project needs during the consultation phase.

What maintenance is required for a garden pond?

Maintaining a garden pond involves regular tasks such as cleaning the pond, ensuring proper filtration, and monitoring water quality. We recommend seasonal checks, which can include removing debris, checking pump functionality, and adjusting plant life as necessary. Our team can also offer maintenance services to keep your pond in excellent condition year-round.

Can I include fish in my garden pond?

Yes, including fish in your garden pond can add vibrancy and movement to your outdoor space. However, it's crucial to design the pond with the appropriate depth and features to support the needs of the fish, including aeration and filtration systems. We can help you select the right species based on your pond's environment and your preferences.

Is planning permission required for a garden pond?

In most cases, you do not need planning permission for a garden pond unless it exceeds a specific size or is in a listed building's garden. However, we advise checking with your local authority and completing any necessary assessments to ensure compliance.
